Clare•mont Stu•dent
1. The monthly newsmagazine of the Claremont Colleges. 2. One who is enrolled or attends classes at the Claremont Colleges.
With the advent of the internet, printed news on and off college campuses is on the decline. Where the traditional college newspaper served its readers by providing them with a free source of national news and a calendar of on-campus events, The New York Times online and college websites have stepped in and taken over. Any college newspaper that attempts to soldier on without heeding this fact will only atrophy, losing readership and interest.
We will not be that newspaper.
It’s not that college newspapers are no longer necessary, it’s that to continue to serve their readers, they must move beyond old formats or run the risk of waxing redundant.
The students of the Claremont Colleges deserve a campus news source that is at once informative and entertaining—that addresses issues in manner congruent with contemporary college culture. Claremontstudent.com was founded to be just that.
We are the only five-college news source dedicated to reliable reporting that combats the dryness and prim restraint of American journalism. Our newsmagazine format gives us the latitude to do this: we print professional content without conforming to the restrictions of an outdated, conventional template. By affording more space (and bandwidth) to individual articles, we allow our writers to dig deeper, and our designers to create a more aesthetically pleasing and dynamic final product. By covering Claremont-only news, we avoid rehashing and retelling old stories, and boring our readers into submission.
Working for Claremont Student is both intellectually challenging and enjoyable. We welcome interested writers, editors, photographers, designers and illustrators, as well as advertising and financial associates.
